There are many different ways to give back in the world today. One of the most satisfying things is to see someone else smile and know that you have done something good for them. The Cary Senior Center in Cary, North Carolina offers weekly volunteer programs for just this reason. There are different programs within the volunteer category.
Every Monday, seniors meet for a community sewing group. Volunteers sew, knit, and crochet a variety of dolls, quilts, and other goodies to be donated to local hospitals and care centers. More volunteers are always welcome, as are donations of material, such as yarns, cotton cloths, and other fabrics. For details, it is requested that those interested call the Senior Center (phone number provided below). This group meets in the ballroom of the vicinity from 9 AM to 11:30 AM.
In a separate program called Warm Up America, seniors are encouraged to bring knitting needles, yarn, and a warm heart! Volunteers knit and crochet blankets that will then be donated to various local charities. The creativity, self-expression and care that goes into these items can be felt always. Some yarn is provided, however donations are always accepted. This program meets in Classroom 303 on the third Thursday of every month, from 1 PM to 4 PM.

It’s that time of year again- the weather is getting nice, we’re shedding our old sweaters, and yes, we’re all anxious to prepare for some yard sales! Folks are gathering up their things, so why don’t you? The Cary Senior Center is hosting an annual Yard Sale on June 16th, 2012. The time is 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM. All gently-used items will be accepted from anyone. Thousands of unique items from vintage to brand-new at prices you’ll love. Seniors are invited to volunteer to help set up in addition to donating items. All proceeds will go to the Cary Senior Center and senior clubs that participate in this event.

The Old North State Brass Band, made up of brass and percussion players, has a performance coming up on Friday, May 18th. The show will be from 7 pm to 8:30 pm and is free and open to the public. Where will this great musical display take place, you ask? At the Sertoma Amphitheatre at Bond Park as part of the Sertoma Series. They have been playing together for two years, and are called a “chamber brass” group. Their playing selection offers pieces from the swing era, marches, solos by ensemble members, and novely numbers. I hope that you are able to make it out to this once in a lifetime performance! Bring the whole family to experience something fun and new.

The brain is one of the first organs to degenerate with age. It controls the entire body, and yet we go day to day without even thinking about its health. Keeping the brain healthy and fit is important at any age. Learn new ways to keep your brain engaged during a class provided by the Cary Senior Center. During this class, thirty minutes will be devoted to answering any questions or discussing a topic of interest to the students. The rest of the time will be focused for brain-health activities.
The date of this class is Wednesday, May 9th from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM. There is a modest fee- $1 for returning/registered citizens with the center and $2 for new citizens. For more information on registration, please call (919) 469-4081.

Looking to get active or enjoy some upbeat music? Get up and moving with Beginning Bronze ChaCha, held at the Cary Senior Center in Cary, NC. Get your heart rate going and learn the Latin dance that is fun for all! Dance with or without a partner and feel great the entire time.
This class will be held Tuesday, May 8th from 5pm to 6pm in the Senior Center. There are no fees to participate in this class.
